The City of Bath has known many famous men. Today I pay tribute to the ReV erend Thomas Robert Malthus. He first came to Bath as a schoolboy, though he \e^ little but Latin and good behaviour from his teacher, the Rector of Claverton. y j he returned many years later (in 1834),to yisit his wife's family, Malthus had achieve lasting fame. He died suddenly of heart disease, and was buried in Bath Abpe^ An inscription to him can be seen just inside the door on the left of that graci? honey-coloured building. It describes his integrity, sweetness of temper, benevolo and piety; yet paradoxically, because of his views on the limitation of populations, was "the best abused man of his age". j Malthus played a vital part in Darwin's theory of evolution.
